The house, associated with Sir Francis Drake, started life as a small 13th century Cistercian Abbey. The present house has the ruins of the abbey as part of its structure. There are National Trust exhibits of seafaring items from the time of Drake and Grenville, plus lots about the history of Buckland
Outside there is a herb garden and lots of walks through the estate.
